Signs and Symptoms of Labor

For our obstetrical patients.

Please call us immediately if any of the following occur:

  1. Regular contractions occurring 3-5 minutes apart, lasting 30-45 seconds each. If this is your first baby, please call when the contractions reach the regularity of every 3-5 minutes over 2 hours. If this is your second or more baby, please call when the contractions are getting stronger, occurring 5 minutes apart for 1 hour.
  2. Any heavy bleeding which is more than bloody mucous or light colored spotting at any time in your pregnancy.
  3. If your membranes rupture, i.e. "water breaks" and there is continuous leakage of fluid of any color or a gush of fluid from the vagina.
  4. Persistent, severe abdominal pain.
